Calgon Carbon and Bio Reaction Industries Complete Strategic Alliance

PITTSBURGH, PA  –  07/21/2003

Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE: CCC) announced today that Bio Reaction Industries, LLC and Calgon Carbon Corporation have formed a strategic alliance that will allow Calgon Carbon to offer Bio Reaction’s biofilter systems for odor control. Bio Reaction’s patented biofilter systems will be marketed by Calgon Carbon for use in the municipal wastewater market.

Calgon Carbon will offer Bio Reaction’s biofilters as stand-alone products and with other Calgon Carbon technologies to provide clients with odor control solutions tailored to their specific needs. Under the agreement, Calgon Carbon will be the exclusive sales and marketing outlet in the municipal wastewater market for Bio Reaction products in North America. The products will carry the names of both companies. Along with the products, Bio Reaction will provide a variety of support services.

Biofiltration is a popular technology for reducing both odors and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Biofilters can remove all of the odorous compounds found at municipal wastewater facilities and are considered an environmentally friendly solution to odor problems. Bio Reaction’s family of biofilters has a number of innovative features that result in advantages over other biofilter systems – such as a smaller system footprint, lower operating costs, and more predictable performance.

«Bio Reaction’s biofilter systems are a perfect complement to our existing odor control product portfolio and will allow us to provide our customers with more choices in solving their odor problems,» Said James G. Fishburne, senior vice president of Calgon Carbon Corporation.» This alliance will help us reach our goal of being the number one odor control solutions provider in the municipal wastewater market.»

«This alliance propels Bio Reaction ahead in the wastewater odor control market by aligning us with one of the top names in the pollution and odor control industry,» said Randall Thom, President and CEO of Bio Reaction Industries. «We feel certain this will significantly reduce the time it would have taken a new company with an innovative technology to enter this exclusive marketplace.» Thom further remarked, «It affords Bio Reaction the luxury of pursuing municipal odor control opportunities without distracting BRI from its’ core competency in the industrial VOC markets.»

Bio Reaction Industries, LLC, based in Tualatin, Oregon, was founded to develop, manufacture, and market products that utilize a patented biofiltration system to biologically digest volatile organic and odor compounds created by a variety of generators including those in the paint & coatings industries, wood products, industrial odors for the animal and food processing industries, and others.

Calgon Carbon Corporation, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a global leader in services and solutions for making air and water cleaner and safer. The company employs approximately 1,000 people at 14 operating facilities and 11 sales and service centers worldwide.
